Welcome to the Redistricting Game!
Welcome to the Redistricting Game!
Redistricting is coming up, and now is your chance to try redrawing DC's wards yourself. Make your own map and we'll tell the DC Council what you recommend!
The map of DC shown here is broken up into a number of areas. If you live in DC, our first step will be for you to identify which area you live in. Just click on that area on the map.
Now, you can try to redistrict DC yourself.
By DC law, each ward must have nearly equal population, plus or minus at most 5%. Three wards exceed those limits. To create a valid new ward map, switch areas around between wards until all 8 are within the legally allowed range.
To change a area, click on it and then select the ward to assign it to. The population numbers will update below.
Ward 1
Ward 2
Ward 3
Ward 4
Ward 5
Ward 6
Ward 7
Ward 8
Thanks! Just one more step.
Wards are divided into Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs), basically neighborhood councils. As part of the redistricting, DC will decide how to divide up its wards into these ANCs. We think that each ANC should reflect a distinct neighborhood.
Please select the areas in the new ward you created which you think correspond to your "neighborhood", or which you would like to have in your ANC.
Elected representatives from those areas would be voting on decisions that affect your local stores, restaurants, buildings, parks and streets, while your representative would be voting on decisions in those other areas, so please select those areas that you feel have enough in common to be worth having a say in each other's activities.
The current areas, which mostly match Census tracts, aren't necessarily the same as current ANC boundaries. Please include any tracts where you feel a large part ought to be in your ANC.
Thanks for participating!
We will create a report explaining all of the submissions we get to help the DC Council make their choices.
Please spread the word about about the Redistricting Game!
You can also show your own friends the map you made.
